God Stories: Square One

Sep 19, 2015

Community is an essential part of the Christian life. Read the letters written by Paul to the early church in the New Testament, and you’ll see repeated reminders to love one another, to encourage one another, to live together peacefully.  Read the descriptions of the early Christian church in Acts, and you’ll see a people who spent their time together, shared everything, studied together, ate together… It is in community that we learn how to love, how to serve, and how to live out our faith in our everyday lives.

And often, it is in the context of community that God shows up.

Abundant Life is privileged to have several of these small communities of believers in our midst, and one of them is Square One.  Square One started about a year ago, a small group of young men and women ranging in age from 18 to 35 meeting weekly to spend time learning about God, serving others, and encouraging one another.

It was a simple goal: to provide a community for young adults to live out their faith.

And God showed up.

Relationships began to develop, and weekly meetings that were supposed to last an hour stretched another couple of hours into the evening as members of Square One began to enjoy their time together more and more.  They stayed and talked and laughed.  And then they became a community, authentic and connected.

The group began to serve together, joining other organizations and helping out, and even throwing a carnival for the community at Easter. And as they’ve served, they’ve seen God do more through them than what they were capable of accomplishing on their own.

Individuals within the group began to grow in their faith, making changes in the way they were living. They began to make different choices. They were gradually beginning to choose different ways of spending their time.  They started reading their Bibles, attending church on Sunday mornings, getting involved in discipling younger believers.

Lives are starting to change, and the ripples of change are moving outward.

And while Square One is small, with only 12 to 15 young adults in attendance on an average Saturday evening, it is making a God-sized impact on the members of this community. And that’s the point: not that large crowds gather, but that in even the smallest of communities who seek to know Him, God shows up.
